Award-winning engineer Andrew Scheps delivers a special talk at dBs Bristol

Delivering to a packed out lecture theatre, engineer and producer Andrew Scheps took command of our Dolby Atmos suite for an unforgettable session.

If you're even remotely familiar with the world of recorded music, Andrew Scheps will be a name that carries no small amount of import. With over three decades worth of experience working with seminal artists like Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Mars Volta, Adele, Lana Del Rey… the list goes on.

Understandably, we were beyond excited to welcome Andrew to dBs Bristol to speak with our students about his approach to mixing in Dolby Atmos. Those in the room were treated to a plethora of immersive mixes, with Andrew talking through his Atmos mixing process on tracks from The 1975, Hozier, Finnegan Tui and Caroline Polachek.

During the session and subsequent Q&A, our students were thoroughly treated with a long list of tips into Andrew's creative process, the plugins he uses and the custom-scripted tools he has created to transform the efficiency of his workflow.

As part of the visit, we were fortunate enough to host a second guest talk with Grammy-nominated music producer David Benson (pictured left) and consultant, professor and education leader Dr. Maurice Ghysels (pictured right).

Equipped with a wealth of new creative techniques from Andrew's session, David and Maurice introduced our students to the essential communication skills needed for a professional audio engineer; highlighting the common pitfalls for recording sessions and how clear communication can be the lynchpin for bringing out the best performance from a session.

The recordings of these two talks will never be publicly released, but remain an invaluable resource for our students and staff to use for many years to come. If you're thinking about applying to study with us at dBs Institute, this is one of many fantastic talks from the vault that you'll be able to access during your time here.
