COVID delayed your application to dBs? Prepare now for clearing.

After a year of uncertainty, clearing offers a crucial opportunity to get your future back on track.

If the pandemic has caused you to put off applying to university, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. With exams being cancelled and many universities moving their teaching online this year, lots of school-leavers have delayed making important decisions about their future. But with the world opening up and freedom feeling ever closer, now’s a great time to start thinking seriously about what happens next. If you’ve recently set your sights on studying in September and are suddenly wishing you’d applied to dBs sooner, clearing offers a second chance.

What is clearing?

Clearing is a process that matches unfilled university places to students that are yet to secure a university offer.

It kicks off before results day

The system is best-known and most commonly used by students who missed out on a place at their first-choice university on results day. However, clearing actually opens much sooner than this and can be used by anyone who is yet to secure and firm a university offer.

From the 5th of July to the 19th of October 2021, you can apply for courses using clearing, if you’re not already holding a university offer and the courses you are interested in still have places.

Not just for those who didn’t get the grades

There are many reasons why a person might find themselves applying to university through clearing. Changing your mind about what you want to study or your university of choice not living up to expectations are both common reasons.

On top of this, COVID-19 has had drastically affected the way people are thinking about university. Last year was a record year for students applying to university through clearing as a result of exam cancellations and inaccurately predicted grades. With results being calculated in a new way this year, we are once again expecting a lot of last-minute applications.
