Free Software Friday - Big Fish Audio Momentum

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Big Fish Audio's Momentum is a free plugin that lets you easily reconstruct a humble loop or sample into something unique and inspiring.

Samples and loops can provide a great starting point for new ideas or adding that missing element, however you can get lost in trying to manipulate them into something that feels more true to your sound and lose the creative spark.

With Momentum, you're only a few clicks away from a new idea. Once you've downloaded the plugin and assigned it a channel in your DAW, you'll be able to browse the paid library of Big Fish Audio's sample packs and loop libraries (there's 3.8GB free to download too), or you can import your own .wav or .aiff to edit.

Each piece of audio is assigned it's own channel within the plugin, the levels of which can be altered through the in-built mixer. Once you've selected your sample/loop, the waveform will be displayed and the keyboard at the bottom of the plugin UI will show which notes can be used to trigger it.

Below the waveform is the slice function, which is the most exciting part about Momentum, as it allows you to start making quick but noticeable changes to the audio. There are 8 slice options to work with; VolPan, Pitch, Reverse, Stutter, Filter, LoFi, Delay, Reverb. Each of these controls has macro parameters within them to further develop your the sample/loop. Slices can be made to the BPM/signature, however you can add custom data to the slices and move beyond those constraints if you want.

There's more functionality to be found within Momentum, but you can dig deeper into the plugin yourselves. If you're someone that frequently works with samples and loops, or would like to be but struggle to add your own stamp to them, then this is a great starting point.

Momentum is available for Windows and macOS and can be downloaded for free using the link below.
