Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.
After months with no guitar-based free plugins, ML Sound Lab's Amped Stevie T Free is our second in the last month, and much like Resonant DSP's Swanky Amp, there's plenty of great reasons why we think you should check it out.
First of all, look at how great that UI design is. We can't be the only ones who sometimes grow weary of the hyper-sleek and futuristic UIs on a lot of plugins out there. Don't be fooled by its unassuming looks though, because this free amp sim is seriously good.
It comes packaged with a single amplifier model; DjentGod. For those of you not accustomed with the myriad of sub-genres in metal, Djent is all about high-gain and low tunings - really low. Within that model come four different cabinet models (ML Mega Djent, ML Mega OS, ML Mars PR-M75, and ML Bgnr Uber) which offer a nice variation of tones to tweak to your preference.
You can also load custom cabinet impulse responses, or do away with the cabinet presets and use an external cabinet sim instead. Despite its focus on the heavier spectrum of tones, the amp also comes with a pretty great sounding clean channel.
Like all plugins we cover, we encourage you to use this in whatever way you choose. The high gain and distortion can have some crazy applications both on guitar and when used to process other instruments and audio signals, so it's well worth playing around with.
You can download Amped Stevie T Free for both Windows and macOS (VST3, AU, and AAX/ 32, 64-bit) using the link below.
