Free Software Friday - vMPC2000XL

Written by dBs Institute | Jan 5, 2020 8:00:00 AM

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Institute blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Painstakingly modelled on the classic Akai MPC2000XL sampler, the vMPC2000XL is a fully open-source emulation that can be used as a standalone app or VST plugin alongside all major DAWs.

From the onscreen menus, the classic workflow, and even the buttons, this emulation is as close to getting hands-on with this classic bit of kit without having to part with a single penny. It doesn't feature the same signal path, but rather a simulation of the MPC's digital voice filter, but it's a rather small concession.

The attention to detail doesn't stop there either, as the vMPC2000XL allows you to load files that the original hardware could, including APS, ALL, PGM, SND, MID and WAV.

The creator is keen to state that it comes with its fair share of bugs and crashes, and is by no means a replacement for something like Battery. However, if you own a 2000XL and need a 'travel version' or if you're just curious to try it out while you have a bit more free time than usual, then this is certainly a worthwhile download.

vMPC2000XL is available to download for free for macOS (AU/VST2/VST3), Windows (32/64-bit/VST2/VST3) and Linux (VST2), using the link below.
