How we started Girls Don't Sync: Behind the scenes with G33

Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how female-led DJ collective Girls Don't Sync started, and what they stand for, with Gaia - aka G33.

At a recent Industry Insights guest lecture at dBs Institute's Manchester campus, Gaia - aka G33 - from female-only DJ collective Girls Don't Sync gave our students the behind-the-scenes story of how they started.

How Girls Don't Sync started

Tracking her journey from moving back to Liverpool, where she worked as a promoter at 24 Kitchen Street alongside her community work at a youth club in Toxteth, Gaia explains how the collective developed "naturally".

Meeting the other members at 24 Kitchen Street and the youth club, they began to put on more shows in Liverpool and expanded to London; all the time championing women and underrepresented communities.

"Something that has always been really routed in Girls Don't Sync," says Gaia, "Is that celebration and representation of DJs, particularly from marginalised genders... That's something we still do and is really core to our ethos."

What Girls Don't Sync stand for

"For us, being the only girls on the line up isn't success," continues Gaia, "Otherwise, we have just failed. For a lot of promoters, they see us as a four. They see a black girl a mixed-race girl and a gay girl and they think they've ticked every box. For us, diversity doesn't just start and end with gender. It's so much more than that."
