Si Littlewood: Soundtracking the sea for Plymouth's Ocean exhibition

dBs Plymouth first-year student Si Littlewood has been enlisted to sound design for a new interactive exhibition at The Levinsky Gallery that pays homage to the sea.

Of all the places in the UK, it's apt that a new exhibition on humankind's connection with the sea is taking place in Plymouth - our Ocean City.

Ocean, a new interactive exhibition at The Levinsky Gallery that is free to visit until 16th December 2023, is a celebration of "our human connection with the water that covers over 70% of the planet. It does this from a number of different perspectives, bringing together world-leading researchers with contemporary artists and designers to create new works that invite a deeper understanding of the interconnected nature of land and sea."

As part of the exhibition, first-year BA (Hons) Electronic Music Production student Si Littlewood has been designing the sound for one of the installations - a short film called Keepers by the artist Mat Chivers. Keepers, which was specially commissioned for the exhibition, "considers how the precarious moment of change we’re in right now confronts us with the urgent need to focus our actions in a way that recognises our dependence on other-than-human life and ecologies, in the oceans and on land."

Si's role in the project was to edit, clean up, mix and master Mat’s dialogue. Using Logic X's stock plugins, Si, "took the voice into a more robotic, androgynous, AI-type sound."

Be sure to head to the exhibition to hear Si's work while the exhibition is running this year!
