At dBs Institute, our postgraduate degrees in music production are designed to help you develop your skills, gain new contacts in the music industry, build a plan for your professional development and explore the boundaries of your creative practice.
Here, we take a look at the key benefits of studying a master’s degree in music production. We’ll also examine the MA Music Production and MA Innovation in Sound degrees at dBs, which are available to study at our Bristol, Plymouth and Manchester campuses and online from wherever you are in the world. Throughout your music production master’s degree, you will study modules designed to elevate your mixing, mastering and production skills to an advanced level, ready for the music industry.
In our MA Music Production degree, you will explore the entire spectrum of mixing and mastering artistry, whether you’re planning on using these skills for your own music or as a professional mixing and mastering engineer.
You will learn advanced technical music production processes and end your course with a clear understanding of the intricacies of professional workflows, as well as tried and tested methods for improving your efficiency and output.
If you’ve already studied an undergraduate degree, you’ll know that, throughout your studies, you can learn about a broad range of topics within your chosen discipline. However, when studying a master's degree in music production, you will hone in on an area you’re particularly interested in - or one that you’re already working in!
This specialisation means that you can become a ‘master’ - hence the name - in your chosen field. Want to develop skills in immersive audio and surround sound, for example? You can sharpen those skills during your degree. Want to build a business plan for your production studio to gain more clients and investment? Nothing is stopping you from having that as a focus of your course.
In a music production master’s degree, there is much greater flexibility, and you can prioritise the areas that keep you energised, while still developing skills in other areas you may not have considered.
Studying either of our MA Innovation in Sound or MA Music Production degrees provides you with opportunities for specialisation. The modules on both of these music production courses allow you to explore a range of fields and then encourage you to focus on a specific area for your final major project, which has the potential to form the foundation of your future career.
Studying a master’s in music production brings you closer to the music industry than an undergraduate, as you’ll need to do more primary research and make deeper connections with industry figures to complete your final major project. You’ll have to seek out industry opportunities and gain a firmer understanding of what it means to work as a music producer professionally, which we’ll cover in the next chapter.
Elliot Williams, a recent MA Innovation in Sound graduate, collaborated with Deaf Rave and used SUBPAC technology to create music that deaf people and the hard of hearing can enjoy. Learn more about his project and experience here!
At dBs Institute, we prioritise getting our students on the right path for a career in the music industry; it’s present in everything we do across our courses and campuses.
That’s never truer than in our Music Production Master’s degree, where our Professional Development Module is specifically designed to help students in their career journey.
Throughout this module, you will develop a deep understanding of how to set up and run your own business or create a skills development plan to become a master of your career. You’ll learn about the legal requirements of setting up a business, what is involved logistically and how to communicate with others as a business owner. You will also sharpen your research skills and prepare for your Project Realisation module.
All of this work is guided by tutors like Chris Page, better known as DC Breaks, who knows everything there is to know about being successful in the music industry. Find out more about him in this Meet The Team interview!
Studying a master’s isn’t all about preparing for the industry, it’s also about expanding your creative boundaries, learning new skills, and breaking the rules!
If this sounds like your cup of tea, our MA Innovation in Sound degree is made for rule-breakers and game-changers. On this course, you will explore the boundaries of sound and create a project that is unconventional and unlimited in its scope.
