Step inside the studio: dBs launches free summer school for 15 to 18 year olds

This summer, dBs Institute of Music is delighted to be running a free three-day summer school for young people aged 15 to 18 across its Bristol, Plymouth and Manchester campuses.

The programme gives students the chance to spend three days working in professional studios, learning how songs are written, recorded and produced. Participants will collaborate with other young creatives, experiment with professional equipment and leave with music they helped create.

No previous experience is required as the summer school is designed for anyone curious about music production, songwriting, recording or performance, with a particular focus on welcoming students who may not usually have access to opportunities like this.

"We're incredibly excited to be launching the dBs Summer School this year and feel very lucky to be in a position where we can offer this opportunity completely free of charge. At dBs, we have access to incredible studios, equipment and creative spaces, and we know that many young people simply don't get the chance to experience environments like this," said Georgia Winstanley, Student Recruitment Manager at dBs Institute. "We want to open our doors to students with passion and potential, regardless of their background or previous experience, and give them the opportunity to create, collaborate and build confidence in a real professional setting."

Across the three days, students will move from confidence-building and taster activities into hands-on workshops led by freelancers, alumni and local creatives, before spending the final day in studio rotations covering recording, mixing and playback. The programme has been designed to demystify higher education and professional studio spaces, with applications particularly welcomed from students from low-income households, underrepresented ethnic backgrounds, care-experienced and first-generation HE students, female and non-binary students, and those without access to music technology at school or college.

The summer school runs from 10am to 3pm daily at all three campuses. Plymouth and Manchester will run from 21 to 23 July, with Bristol following the week after from 28 to 30 July. Places are limited and can be booked via the dBs website.
