VIDEO: Benny’s mission to make multi-sensory music therapy tools more affordable

Written by dBs Institute | Oct 8, 2023 11:54:00 AM

Benny Turner is on a mission to make multi-sensory music therapy tools more affordable, and he's getting there through the research and product and environment development he worked on while studying at dBs.

The main focus of Benny's research is the impact of music and sound within the context of community music and music therapy. Through his work with an organisation in Peterborough,  Benny has been exploring the effectiveness of multi-sensory environments, the benefits of using low-cost adaptive music technologies, and technical solutions for providing greater access to meaningful music making for people with complex needs.

Utilising Arduino, Adafruit HUZZAH32 and Max [MSP], Benny has been able to develop a multitude of tools that improve the accessibility options for music making.

Benny Turner: "What inspired me to start the project… was just the fact that I'm already working in the field of community music and music therapy, and we do a lot of work with special needs schools and other similar settings and I think just seeing that the sensory spaces they have there cost so much money to install and to maintain… and I just wanted to look at ways that I could overcome some of those barriers."
