For Seamus Maguire's MA Innovation in Sound 'Realisation' module, he explored haiku and Eastern philosophy with an audiovisual, surround sound experience involving animation, composition and self-reflection.
Driven by a keen interest in Buddhism, Shay's project aims to raise the awareness of established Eastern philosophy to a Western audience through a multi-sensory experience.
The finished piece is an animated film, mixed in 8.1 surround sound, with location recording and original compositions crafted by Shay. The story starts in the stars, before progressing into the trees of the forest, to a flowing river, a lake where stones are being skimmed across the surface, and finally, at a campfire where Shay is.
It's a fantastic example of the kind of multidisciplinary work that students can create on the Master's, and it's focus on spirituality and sense of self, combined with the immersive delivery in 8.1 makes it a truly memorable piece of work.

Seamus Maguire: "I'm focusing on Haiku because based on my research I know that Haiku, they had an understanding of how to frame the words in order to emphasise something quite important about 'being', in general, so 'being' in a philosophical sense."
