VIDEO: Jack Weallans’ tool for self-reflection powered by AI and game engine technology

MA Innovation in Sound graduate Jack Weallans explains his honours project, an exciting audio-visual project that explores the impact of artificial intelligence and digital technology on human experience.

Spurred by the question of, 'What makes us "us"?, Jack's project is an exploration of some of the most pertinent themes in both the creative industries, as well as life in general. The emergence of AI, deep fakes and taste-making driven by algorithms became the bedrock of Jack's work.

The final piece is an audio-visual project that examines the human condition; the dividing line of what is real, what is artificial, and what can be used as a tool for people in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse.

Fusing audio, Unreal Engine and artificial intelligence, Jack created a digital replication of himself to bridge that gap and others also in recovery, using AI to learn from their experiences and create emotionally diverse digital avatars.

Jack Weallans: "From the project I've learned that my fears are somewhat justified, however there is actually quite a lot of positive potential for this stuff. And it's finding that balance of progress that's for the good of people, and us being wary of stuff that could be of harm."
